Here I go...again

It sounds pathetic.  I'm back again.  For now.

You know when you're going about your day and you have little conversations with yourself?  Meaningful/meaningless - it doesn't matter.  There they are to keep you company when you have no other adults readily available to talk to.  Well, I'd like to preserve a few of mine.  Enter blog.  (Also good for family updates and long kid stories that are not facebook friendly!)

Since the last entry, I've birthed another wonderful little guy, Carter James.  He's the "S"uper Baby.  Sweetness, snuggles, smiles, seemingly perfect!  (Us youngest children usually are! just kidding).  I am also 2/3 through P90X again trying to undo what CJ did.  Okay, okay, I know he didn't MAKE me eat all those pregnancy cravings...

I'll probably be "back posting," writing about what's already happened and trying to put up a few accompanying pictures.  So more from the past is yet to come!

My P90X Journey

90 days: working out 6 days a week for over an hour each day. I have not done a workout regimen like this before. In fact, I've never been so intentional about working out for myself ever before. At first, the workouts alone are difficult. Then, it's the time commitment that gets to you. I'm proud that I have completed what I set out to accomplish. I may not have "infomercial results," but I do have some ;D Happy P90X Graduation to me!

I'd like to share my results so friends who are considering or doing this workout program might find inspiration and be encouraged! I didn't "bring it" every time and even missed a workout a couple times. I felt like I accomplished a lot just by completing each day and didn't worry as much about pushing myself to the limit. Overall, I'm extremely proud of my results and will be doing it again! I have had more energy, felt stronger and healthier, and have slept better than ever before! If you do the work, you'll get results too!

Weight: lost 19.4 pounds
*Information from my bathroom scale is obviously not 100% accurate!
Fat %: 28% to 20.7%
H20 %: 52.5% to 58.9%
Muscle Mass %: 36.8% to 41%
BMI: 24.9 to 21.3

I WISH I had measured myself at the beginning! I first took measurements in the 6th week, I think (2nd phase, week 2). That's a little before halfway. I can only imagine what my true loss is!!!
Total body inches lost from week 6 to week 13: 10 inches!!

Before you begin, you are supposed to take a Fit Test to make sure you are in decent shape to start such a rigorous program. Then at the end, you take the Fit Test again to compare results. Here are some of my favorite improvements:
Pull ups: 3 to 15 (with chair help, but still! :D)
Vertical leap: 9" to 14 1/2"
Push ups: 24 to 35
Toe Touch (hands reaching past toes with legs together): 3 inches to 6 inches
Wall Squat: 1:09 to 2:30

So there you have it! If you do decide to do P90X, let me know so I can encourage you along the way! It really helps things move along :D

Whoops. New kid; new blog.

Our previous blog was named Scott and Laura G. plus three. When I chose that name, I guess I figured that down the road, I could edit it. I don't see that in the options list. And since we've added one more to our brood of blessings, it's no longer 'plus three'! Therefore, I decided to start up a new blog - with a title that has room to grow (wink wink).

What will I write about? Who knows. Mostly kid-related issues, I'm sure. After all, my sweet foursome is my main ministry here at home besides their Daddy. I may choose to write about other thoughts that I have. Wait. Do I have any of those anymore?? ;) Sometimes.

Trimming the Tree with Monsters

In my opinion, it really is the most wonderful time of the year! I love the decorations, cozy weather, hot cocoa, lights, trees, special ornaments, music, movies, and creating memories. Already we have had some fun ones we'd like to share. One of our traditions each Christmas is to commemorate the year with an ornament. This year the boys received Elmo ornaments since 2008 is when they fell in love with the little monster. Though distracted at times and missing the point of leaving them up once they're hanging, the boys were old enough to help Daddy decorate the tree and thoroughly enjoyed it. Mommy is officially off the hook! I, like my mother when we were growing up, have now become the ornament unwrapper. Here are some pictures of the humorous event: serious concentration, Noah imaginatively sipping out of a teacup ornament, and Hayden playing with a wooden nativity. The other pictures show the house in some of its luminescent glory. More to come!

6 Years in Numbers

It is almost our sixth anniversary! As I reflect on our years of marriage, I am reminded of some of the "countless" blessings that God has given to us. Thank you, Jesus, for every trial, every good thing, and every second we have to reflect your love onto each other.

Not too Shabby

I would just like to take a moment and share my glee and triumph... After nearly six years of marriage and birthing three children, I discovered today that my wedding dress is too big. I mean, I look rather hideous. It's a strange thing to celebrate - looking the opposite of what you hope to look like in your wedding dress! Of course, this is only cause for celebration because it is after the fact. In any case - woo hoo! Not too shabby indeed.

Sick & Tired

At the moment, I feel this way quite literally - sick and tired. My nose is running, my ears are plugged as if I'm heading towards an ear infection, my throat is scratchy and a cough is looming around the corner... And I'm just plain exhausted. I don't sleep well when I have symptoms like these - even if I have a miraculous opening in my day that should be set aside for a nap, it does me no good. I've been living with sickies on my hands for over a week now. I should've known it was just a matter of time before my immune system would be defeated. But my health is not the primary reason for me blogging this evening.

I would like to use the phrase the way I'm used to hearing it... I'm already sick and tired of people warning me of the "terrible twos". Don't people know that this "phase" that some psychologist first came up with is just an excuse for bad parenting? "Oh let's coin a term that excuses my child's unruly behavior and tantrum-throwing and sour attitude, so I, as the parent, can't be held responsible. It's not my fault - our little guy is just in the terrible twos. Or he's already or still there..." Um, actually it IS your fault because your child learns from you what is acceptable and what is not.

When this time approaches, it is nothing more than children testing the boundaries set up by their parents. They are figuring out where their dependence ends and independence begins. So the easy answer is be firm in those boundaries. Consistency is key. If you waiver on them, your poor child is going to be confused because yesterday he got away with it and today mom is blowing a gasket. He doesn't know when you actually mean business, so HE will be the one who is consistent! - - at trying to figure you out! If you are steady, your children will know your expectations, the discipline that awaits them if they overstep any boundaries, and the reward if they choose to obey. I once heard amazing parenting advice from a well-known pastor and author. He said that parents should never want independence for their children. (I'm not talking about tying their own shoes or anything - I'm talking about having an independent and unsubmissive spirit...) The job of a godly parent is not to transfer your child's dependence on you to independence as an adult. A godly parent's job is to transfer his or her dependence on you to dependence on God! When they are testing the waters and yearning for that independence, remind them who is the Boss of all! (And by the way, I may seem like Mrs. Disciplinarian here, but I've just got a fire in my belly about this... Trust me, I LOVE my children. But the Good Book says that we HATE our children if we don't discipline them! So I take all of this very seriously!)

Therefore, if you have a warped understanding of this phase in a child's life, I'm warning you... Don't you dare talk to me about the terrible twos or you will get an earful. I don't know about you, but I plan to be as consistent as possible, thus enjoying the "terrific twos" when my children have been and continue to be trained in godly obedience and discipline.

Join me in the minority, won't you?
